This policy explains what information Hookups For Kenyans LLC collects when you use hookupsforkenyans.com or the Hookups For Kenyans Android application, why we collect it, how long we keep it, who else sees it, and what you can ask us to do with it. Who is responsible
Hookups For Kenyans LLC is the data controller for the information described here, which means we decide what is collected and why. You can reach us through the contact pageand questions about this policy specifically are welcome there.
What we collect, and when
We collect very little, and most of it only because you chose to send it. Nothing below is bought from a data broker or gathered from your other accounts.
- Browsing the site
- Our hosting provider records standard server logs: your IP address, the page requested, the time, the referring page, and your browser’s user agent string. These are produced by the web server for every visitor to every website, and are used to keep the service running and to investigate abuse and faults.
- Leaving a comment
- The name and email address you type into the comment form, the comment itself, your IP address, and your browser’s user agent string. WordPress collects the IP address and user agent with every comment so that spam and abuse can be identified. Your name and comment are published if the comment is approved; your email address and IP address are not published.
- Submitting a safety report
- What you are reporting, the reason you select, the page, username or number you tell us about, your written explanation, and an email address only if you choose to give one so we can reply. We also record the IP address the report came from, solely to stop the form being flooded. Reports are stored privately and are never published.
- Contacting the desk
- Whatever you send us, through whichever channel you choose, together with the contact detail you used. If you message the desk on a third-party messaging service, that service also holds the conversation under its own privacy policy, not ours.
- Asking to be listed
- The details you provide for the listing, and a contact route for the desk to reach you. You decide what appears publicly. Anything you send us that is not meant for publication is kept off the site.
- Notifications
- If you allow notifications in your browser or in the app, a device token is created so a message can be delivered to that device. The token identifies the device, not you by name, and it stops working as soon as you turn notifications off.
We do not ask for, and do not want, your identity document number, your banking password, your PIN, a one-time code, or your full card number. If anything claiming to be from us asks you for one of those, it is not from us.
Why we are allowed to hold it
Under the Data Protection Act, 2019, personal data must be collected for an explained and lawful purpose. Ours are these: your consent, where you chose to comment, report, allow notifications or contact us; the performance of a service you asked for, where you are dealing with the desk; and our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure, free of spam and abuse, and working properly. Where we rely on consent you can withdraw it at any time, and doing so does not affect anything done before you withdrew it.
How long we keep it
- Server logs are rotated and discarded by the hosting provider on its normal schedule, which is a matter of weeks rather than years.
- Approved comments stay on the page they belong to until the post is removed or you ask us to take the comment down.
- Comments refused as spam are deleted, not archived.
- Safety reports are kept while the matter is open and for a reasonable period afterwards, so that a repeat pattern involving the same person can be recognised. They are then deleted.
- Notification tokens are removed when you turn notifications off or uninstall the app.
Who else sees it
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for anyone else’s advertising. It is seen by the small number of people who run the desk and the site, and by the service providers that make the site work, our hosting company, and the notification delivery service, each acting on our instructions.
We will disclose information where we are legally required to, or where it is genuinely necessary to protect someone from harm, for example, a credible report involving a minor or a threat of violence. We will not hand a reporter’s details to the person they reported.
Cookies and similar technology
The site uses only the cookies it needs. WordPress sets a cookie to remember the name and email you typed into the comment form, so you do not have to type them again, and sets session cookies if you sign in to the administration area. Page caching may store a cookie to tell a signed-in visitor apart from an anonymous one, so that the right version of a page is served.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking them will not lock you out of reading the site; it will mean the comment form forgets you.
The Android application
The app is distributed as a direct download from this site rather than through an app store. It shows the same listings and guidance as the website. It asks for permission to show notifications only if you want them, and it does not read your contacts, your messages or your photographs. If you would rather not be asked at all, use the website in your browser instead.
Your rights, and how to use them
The Data Protection Act, 2019 gives you rights over your own information, and we will honour them.
- To be told what we hold about you and why, this page is the standing answer, and you can ask for more detail.
- To see a copy of the information we hold about you.
- To have it corrected if it is wrong or incomplete.
- To have it deleted where we no longer need it, including having your comments removed.
- To object to a particular use of it, or to ask us to restrict what we do with it while a disagreement is sorted out.
- To withdraw consent you previously gave, at any time.
To use any of these, write to us through the contact page and say what you want. We will respond within a reasonable period and will not charge you for it. We may need to ask something to establish that the request really comes from you, but we will not demand an identity document to action a simple deletion.
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, you are entitled to complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in Kenya. We would rather you came to us first, but the right is yours either way.
How the information is protected
The site is served over an encrypted connection, so what you send is not readable in transit. Administrative access is limited to the people who need it. Safety reports are stored privately and are not visible to visitors or in search results.
We will not pretend this is perfect. No website can promise that a breach is impossible, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. What we can say is that we hold as little as we can, which is the only protection that never fails.
Children
This is an adult service and is not for anyone under eighteen. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has sent us information, tell us through the report form and we will delete it.
Protecting yourself
Most of the risk in online dating is not in what a website stores. It is in what people are persuaded to hand to each other. Keep your identity number, your home and work addresses, your banking details, your passwords and your private photographs to yourself until you have good reason to do otherwise, and keep them to yourself even then, if you are being hurried. Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the revision date below changes with it. If a change materially affects what we collect or what we do with it, we will say so on the site rather than quietly updating the page.
